Smart FOX is a promising project in health data research that is supported by 19 partner organizations. The aim of the project is to make significant progress in various areas of health data donation and research over the next two years.
The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is Austria’s largest non-university research institution and is the specialist among European research institutions for the key infrastructure issues of the future. Around 1,400 employees at 10 Austrian locations conduct research into technologies and solutions in areas such as energy, health, transportation, automation, etc. The Digital Health Information Systems Competence Unit conducts research and development to make the primary and secondary use of health data more efficient, secure and sustainable.

EIT Health was founded in 2015 as a ‘Knowledge and Innovation Community’ (KIC) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The idea behind the EIT KICs is that innovation thrives best when the right people are brought together to share their expertise. The Institute for Clinical Epidemiology was founded in 1986 – back then as the Tyrol Tumor Registry – and has greatly expanded its field of activity over time.
Since 2017, it has been part of the State Institute for Integrated Care (LIV) Tirol of Tirol Kliniken GmbH. Its traditional tasks include the collection, preparation, examination and statistical processing of data on specific clinical pictures or medical interventions. Furthermore, the research and application of modern digitalization, decision support and the development of prediction models play a central role at the IET.
As a modern, private health university, UMIT TIROL specializes in current professional and research fields as well as challenges in healthcare and technology. The main focus of the Division for Health Networking and Telehealth at UMIT TIROL is on the establishment and further development of efficient and innovative solutions in the healthcare sector.
The division’s pillars include the development and use of telemedical solutions in healthcare programs. The division also deals with data integration and information management and is currently establishing the clinical data warehouse of the tirol kliniken.
Modeling and simulation is another application and research focus of the division (e.g. “surviral”, the epidemiological early detection system).
The Institute for Innovation and Digitalization in Law was founded in 2017 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna. The Institute for Innovation and Digitalization in Law sees itself as the Faculty of Law’s link to the digital revolution.
It deals with a variety of legal issues in the modern media and information society that arise from the rapid and continuous increase in technological innovations. The Institute is particularly concerned with information technology and intellectual property law, with a special focus on data protection law and copyright law.
Adequate responses to the legal, ethical and social issues that arise with the development of technology require an interdisciplinary approach. The Institute is therefore working on a number of multidisciplinary, externally funded projects, particularly in the field of healthcare.
